Description

Delight in these rich chocolate sugar cookie bars that are easy to make, combining a soft, fudgy center with a light, crunchy exterior.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 2 tablespoons milk
  • 1/2 cup chocolate chips

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9×13 inch baking pan, ensuring it’s fully coated to prevent sticking.
  2. Cream the softened butter and granulated sugar until smooth and light in color—this usually takes about 2-3 minutes.
  3. Beat in the egg and vanilla extract, blending everything until well incorporated.
  4. In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, cocoa powder, baking soda, and salt.
  5. Slowly add the dry mixture to the wet mixture, stirring just until combined to avoid overmixing.
  6. Gently fold in the chocolate chips, allowing it to distribute evenly throughout the batter.
  7. Spread the rich chocolate batter into your prepared baking pan, smoothing out the top with a spatula to ensure an even bake.
  8. Bake for 20-25 minutes, and check doneness by inserting a toothpick into the center; it should come out with a few moist crumbs, not wet batter.
  9. Allow the bars to cool in the pan for about 10 minutes before frosting.
  10. To make the frosting, combine powdered sugar and milk until smooth, and drizzle it over the cooled bars.
  11. Cut into squares and serve to excited friends and family.

Notes

For a richer experience, add a sprinkle of sea salt on top of the frosting. These bars can be stored in an airtight container for up to a week.
