Description

A delightful dessert of buttery shortbread crust layered with a spiced apple filling, topped with a crunchy oat topping.


Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar, packed
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 3 cups apples, peeled and diced
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 1 cup rolled oats
  • 1/2 cup chopped nuts (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a 9×13 inch baking dish.
  2. In a mixing bowl, combine the flour, softened butter, granulated sugar, brown sugar, vanilla extract, and salt.
  3. Press half of the crumbly mixture into the bottom of the prepared baking dish.
  4. In another bowl, toss the diced apples with cinnamon and lemon juice.
  5. Spread the apple mixture evenly over the crust.
  6. Sprinkle the remaining crumb mixture and the rolled oats atop the apples.
  7. Bake for 30-35 minutes until golden brown.
  8. Allow the bars to cool completely before slicing into squares.

Notes

Try adding nutmeg or cardamom for a twist, or drizzle caramel sauce before serving.
