Description

Savory homemade chicken shawarma wrapped in warm pita bread, bursting with flavor from spices and fresh veggies.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 lb chicken thighs, boneless and skinless
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 2 teaspoons ground cumin
  • 2 teaspoons ground coriander
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • 1 teaspoon turmeric
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1/4 cup plain yogurt
  • 2 tablespoons lemon juice
  • Pita bread or flatbreads for serving
  • Fresh vegetables like cucumber, tomatoes, and onions for garnishing
  • Creamy garlic sauce (store-bought or homemade)

Instructions

  1. Combine the olive oil, cumin, coriander, paprika, turmeric, garlic powder, cinnamon, salt, and pepper in a mixing bowl.
  2. Add the chicken thighs to the marinade and coat thoroughly. Marinate for at least one hour or overnight in the refrigerator.
  3. Preheat your grill or large skillet over medium-high heat.
  4. Cook the marinated chicken for about 5-7 minutes on each side or until golden brown and fully cooked (internal temperature of 165°F/75°C).
  5. Remove the chicken from heat and let it rest for a few minutes before slicing into thin strips.
  6. Mix together the minced garlic, yogurt, lemon juice, and a sprinkle of salt in a small bowl until smooth for the sauce.
  7. Serve the sliced chicken in warm pita bread or flatbreads, topped with fresh vegetables and a drizzle of creamy garlic sauce.

Notes

For added texture, consider toasting your pita before filling. Marinate chicken overnight for best flavor.
